First-of-Kind Philips-Accredited Expandable Mobile MRI
WH Bence designed and manufactured this pioneering expandable Mobile MRI unit for Philips and Humber and North Yorkshire. The project represents a first-of-its-kind solution, combining a fully transportable MRI facility with an innovative three-pod expansion system to create a spacious, efficient clinical environment within a 13.7-metre semi-trailer. The completed unit has been accredited by Philips, demonstrating that the design, manufacture and system integration meet the requirements of one of the world’s leading medical technology providers.
Expandable Clinical Environment
Once on site, hydraulic pods extend from the front and both sides of the trailer to significantly increase the available working space. The interior incorporates a dedicated MRI examination room, a separate technical area and an expanded control room with two patient changing areas, an ergonomic operator workstation, additional fold-down workspace and integrated storage. Patient access is provided by an integrated 500 kg lift, access ramps and a separate staircase with illuminated treads and handrails.
Specialist Engineering and Resilience
The bespoke stainless-steel chassis and stabilisation system are engineered around the demands of transporting and operating the MRI equipment. The examination room incorporates RF shielding, magnetic shielding to contain the 5-gauss line, controlled ventilation and air conditioning, medical-grade anti-static flooring, dimmable LED lighting and an oxygen-depletion safety system linked to automatic extraction. A 250 A three-phase mains connection supports operation on site, while the onboard generator and automatic changeover system protect essential equipment and environmental conditions if the external supply is interrupted.
Intelligent Control and Monitoring
Integrated IFM and Loxone control systems give operators clear control of lighting, alarms and key vehicle functions, while monitoring room temperatures, humidity, fuel level, oxygen level and generator status. Secure Paxton access control, internal and external cameras, fire detection, emergency-stop controls and remote fault reporting further support safe, dependable use.
Delivering More Capacity from a Mobile Footprint
This project brings together specialist vehicle engineering, complex medical-system integration and a patient-focused interior in one highly mobile platform. Its expandable design provides the additional space required for clinical teams and patients without sacrificing transportability, offering healthcare providers a flexible way to increase access to advanced diagnostic imaging. As the first expandable Mobile MRI of its kind to receive Philips accreditation, the unit marks an important milestone for WH Bence and its long-standing collaboration with Philips.
