Designed and manufactured by WH Bence for Cobalt, this relocatable medical unit houses a Siemens PET CT system within a purpose-built, radiation-shielded clinical environment. The 15.5 m unit incorporates a hydraulically deployed slide-out walkway, six-leg self-jacking and levelling system, and eight crane lifting points for flexible site deployment. Its internal layout provides a control room, examination room, hot lab, patient WC, two patient changing/uptake rooms and dedicated plant facilities. WH Bence also designed and provided a bespoke ramp and platform system to give safe access to the reception area and slide-out walkway.
Radiation protection is integral to the design, with the examination room lead-lined in accordance with the project-specific RPA report to protect patients, operators and adjacent areas. The protected envelope includes lead-lined partitions and access doors, integral x-ray warning lights, and a lead-glass viewing window with switchable intelligent glass, allowing staff to maintain observation from the control room. The insulated GRP composite body also includes a 60-minute fire-rated lining and medical-grade antistatic flooring. Clinical conditions are supported by ducted air conditioning, a ten-air-change ventilation system with HEPA filtration and a 20 kW water chiller. An IFM control and remote-monitoring system manages key functions, while integrated fire, security, CCTV, panic-alarm, access-control and external lighting systems support safe day-to-day operation.
